Okay, I tested a few fits after reading this, and yeah, I agree, Manticore has a tough time soloing, but every PvP tank has a hole, you just have to hope and pray it's kinetic, otherwise, tough running for you.
At any rate I have a Hound fit as follows:
3x 'arbalest' siege launcher
1x Coreli C-type MWD (Debating A-type once I get better)
1x Warp Disturptor II
1x Cap Booster I (need to skill in for IIs)
2x Nanofiber Internal Structure II
1x Balistic Control System II
Rigs:
1x Small Bay Loading Accelerator
1x Small Warhead Calefaction Catalyst
It's a pretty sweet setup, I tested it vs my Drake with a friend in it and it fared quite well with AB fitted instead, and I have no worries about targeting anything BS or smaller, BSes are very doable solo I feel, as long as they're solo, but most people are too chicken to fly alone for PvP, but I always look for ships with point. 2-3 SBs can take most any target imo, as the bomb does do significant damage, and with an organized 2 wave fleet of Hounds and Purifiers, you can really tear BSes apart. Since you orbit at 20km or a lil more, you're out of bomb range if your other bomber friends come in to throw shrapnel bombs to help chew that shield up. A bomber with mediocre skills can chew through most BC, with a little finesse.
For those who still say you can't solo in a bomber should work on their math, because solo bomber is EXCEPTIONAL in that case due to the fact it's out of scram range, and available to flee whenever needed. I prefer to run all SBs for gangs, mainly for the shock and awe of such an underestimated ship blowing others apart. If a Hulk can solo can flippers, a Hound can solo brave BS pirates as well, as long as they watch for drones and leave before they die. I took on a Dominix once in my Manticore, and had a good 20 seconds before I even had to worry about my tank breaking, Also, it's worth to note that Val has -many- more BS kills than just 69 solo in a bomber, PvE or not, a BS is a BS, and there are no bad ships in EVE, just bad pilots.
Anyway, just wanted to rant and put up some support for my fellow bombers, take care.!
Edit: The Hound is -really- fast, I found out, and it's even possible to take on (non MWDing) frigs in one with a little finnesse, but that's a bit against the bomber role now that they took our cruise alpha away.
